Prince Albert National Park
Winter is a beautiful time to visit northern Saskatchewan, especially Prince Albert National Park, a million acres of snow-covered wilderness. This winter paradise offers many family-friendly outdoor activities like cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, ice fishing, skating, winter camping, wildlife photography and much more. Snowmobiles are not permitted in Prince Albert National Park but there are hundreds of kilometers of excellent, groomed trails outside the park (see below for more info).

Blue Mountain Adventure Park, North Battleford
If you’re looking for a fun and unique getaway this winter, then Blue Mountain is the place to go. This beautiful outdoor destination has everything on your list, including a tubing park, over 30 kilometers of groomed trails for skating and cross-country skiing, designated trails for snowshoeing, plus a nice chalet to warm up in when you’re cold! You can rent snowshoes and cross-country skis onsite, but you do need to bring your own skates.

Johnston Canyon Ice Walk, Banff
This is one of the most popular attractions in Banff National Park, and home to spectacular frozen waterfalls. This guided hike takes you along steel catwalks built into the canyon walls up to the iconic frozen upper falls, with beautiful views into the gorge below. Wander through a natural cave to gaze down at the frozen falls up close or continue onto the upper falls – a tower of ice that rises 30 meters above your head.

Canmore and Kananaskis
With gorgeous snowy mountains and many winter activities, Canmore and Kananaskis is fun for the whole family. Enjoy scenic snowshoeing at Chester Lake, cross-country or Alpine skiing, waterfall and ice-cave climbing, underground tours of the famous Rat’s Nest cave under Canmore’s Grotto Mountain or even SnowFlow yoga, designed specifically to elevate your season on the slopes with a mindful, proactive approach.

Local Snowmobile Trails

As of the date this blog was posted, snowmobile trails are open in Saskatchewan and Alberta. There are hundreds of kilometers of well-maintained trails in both provinces for sledders to enjoy.

Check out these articles from SnoRiders magazine for the top places to snowmobile in Saskatchewan and Alberta. For eight years, readers voted Hudson Bay their favourite spot in Saskatchewan. It offers consistently deep and fresh snow, lasting well into April, and 690 kilometers of maintained trails with 16 warm-up shelters.

Or check out one of Alberta snowmobilers’ top picks: Athabasca, on the banks of Alberta’s longest river. This outdoor-oriented town boasts 300 kilometers of groomed trails west of Baptiste Lake, with terrain and scenery including boreal forest, river valleys and rolling hills. Two staging areas allow for easy access to the trails, and there are cabins and warm-up areas with picnic tables, fire pits and firewood.

Ahh the Great Canadian Sledding Trip. If only more people got to experience the thrill of tearing through some fresh mountain powder or some deep, untouched snow off the beaten path elsewhere in the Great White North, the world would be a better place.

Given that it’s likely time for you and your family to pack up your sleds and head off for that big weekend trip, we came up with a few things to think about before you head out.

1. Pre-trip trailer inspection

• Check your tires for visible signs of wear or cracks
• After hooking up the trailer, test the coupler/tongue and hitch to make certain the trailer is securely fastened, safety chains are attached and the power connector is plugged in
• Make sure brake and signal lights are in good working order
• Check that tire pressure matches manufacturer’s recommendations
• Inspect your spare tire to be sure it’s ready for action if needed

2. Don't forget the jacks!

We’ve heard stories of our customers forgetting to put ramp jacks in place before they’ve climbed into or attempted to load their trailer. So here is a simple yet important reminder to always do a walkaround of your trailer prior to loading or you could be in for a nasty little surprise.

3. Positioning your sleds

Properly positioning your sleds is crucial for safe towing. Always remember to position the weight of your load more towards the front of the trailer than the back. Here are a few visuals on how to properly load your trailer:

4. Securing your load

We talked about it recently, but properly securing your sleds is critical to the safety of you and your cargo. Flaman carries a variety of sled trailer accessories to help with that. We carry everything you need to secure your load, like e-tracks, d-rings, ski tie downs, and ratchet straps. To protect your trailer flooring and for added stability, we also carry super glides and grip glides as well. Contact your local Flaman Trailer store for more info.

5. Load your truck deck on level ground

Although this one only applies to truck decks, it serves a fair warning for those loading their sleds to always take precautions. A key point to remember when loading your deck is to make sure it’s on level ground, and a good word of advice is to wear a helmet when doing so, or you could risk injury

6. Emergency Preparedness Kit

• Non-perishable, nutrient-dense foods such as protein bars
• Water in a plastic bottle that won’t crack/break when frozen
• Emergency blanket
• First aid kit (bandages, gauze, seatbelt cutter, etc.)
• Small shovel
• Headlamp or wind-up flashlight
• Whistle
• Candles & waterproof matches
• Tow rope & booster cables
• Fire extinguisher

1. Trailer floor protection

If you have an enclosed trailer, particularly sled trailers & car or toy haulers, you know protecting the floor of your trailer against wear and tear is easier said than done. Fortunately, we have products to help you with that.

Poly-bead flooring is durable and provides an extra layer of protection against scuffing and scraping. Super glides and grip glides are also available to protect your flooring from snowmobile carbides and help with traction when loading or unloading.

2. Aftermarket upgrades

Whether your enclosed trailer is your mobile office, workshop, or your winter getaway, making the most of your space is key. We have the upgrades to make your trailer work for you. We have cabinetry for extra storage or workstations for optimal functionality. Other awesome enhancements include shelves, helmet & tool hangers & more.

3. Trailer security

Trailer theft and break-ins are an all-too-common occurrence in towns and cities everywhere. Luckily, we offer a line of theft deterrent products to help protect against theft and break-ins. We have rust-proof coupler locks, wheel chock locks, receiver locks, and door locks available at your local store.

4. Tying down your load

On the topic of trailer safety, ensuring your load is secure and properly tied down is a top priority. D-rings are simple and effective. They make it easy to loop a ratchet strap, rope, or bungee through. And we carry three options, depending on your preference: recessed (1,200 lbs weight capacity), welded D-rings (6,000 lbs), or swivel (6,000 lbs).

E-tracks are another simple, effective way to secure your load. Made of 12 gauge steel, e-tracks mount to the wall of your enclosed trailer and usually run the entire length, making it easy to hook a strap from any angle to secure even the most awkward loads.

5. Tow ropes & hitches

Tow ropes are better to have and not need than need and not have. We carry a couple of options that are perfect for tossing in your truck and hoping you never need to use. Our braided ropes are rated for towing capacity of 12,000-200,000 lbs capacity, depending on your need and use. We have a huge selection of flat ropes, available in 2”-12” widths, up to 50’ lengths, and 200,000 lbs capacity.

How about hitches? We’ve got hitches. Lots of hitches. Everything from adjustable ball and quick slides to 5^th wheel mounted hitches, we really are your trailer accessories headquarters. 6. Cold Weather Wiring Package

Winter on the prairies ain’t always easy. This is especially true for those who frequently travel rural roads amid unpredictable weather conditions. We recommend protecting your trailer’s wiring from the elements by having it rewired to better handle the harsh prairie winter conditions. Our skilled technicians enclosed much of the wiring to better protect against wear and tear caused by snow, and ice. This is particularly important for trailers manufactured outside of Canada, which are not typically built with the Canadian climate in mind.

The winter of 2020/2021 is shaping up to be a great year for sledding. A huge dump of snow across much of the prairies in early November coupled with a global pandemic keeping people at home is the perfect recipe for spending quality time on some fresh powder.

There’s a lot that goes into buying a snowmobile trailer. We’ve talked about it before, but some of the big considerations include choosing between an open vs. enclosed trailer, steel vs. aluminum frame and heated vs. not. A lot of your decision-making will likely come down to budget, storage requirements, your vehicle’s towing capacity and where/how much you’ll use the trailer. Enclosed Sled Trailers

Inline:

Inline enclosed sled trailers are great for people with half-ton trucks who want to haul 3 sleds (or 2 sled with some extra storage). By parking one sled via the front ramp door and two in the main ramp, a 7’ or 7.5’ width inline is an ideal design for smaller trucks.

Deck over/Highboy:

The deck over (aka highboy) is the perfect trailer for the serious sledder. Available in 8’ or 8.5’ width models, they’re designed to easily fit up to 4 sleds in, with heated and insulated models available. Keep in mind trailers this big typically require a ¾- or 1-ton truck to haul. They’re also built with higher clearance so you’re able to pull them in rough terrain or snowy conditions.

Lowboy/Car Hauler:

The lowboy toy or car hauler is designed with a lower deck with the clearance to fit a car, side-by-side (UTV) and other toys. Typically, these trailers are 8.5’ to accommodate space requirements. They’re also ideal for pulling sleds with a long track & skis, making it ideal for pulling mountains-ready sleds.

Open Sled Trailers

Open deck sled trailers are much more economical than their enclosed counterparts. The argument of steel vs. aluminum frame comes into play here. Aluminum is lightweight while maintaining similar towing capacity and increased longevity, as it doesn’t rust or weather as quickly. However, if you’re looking for versatility beyond hauling snowmobiles or ATVs, steel is more economical as they typically cost less than an aluminum trailer would.

But what makes Diamond C’s trailers different?

ENGINEERED BEAM TECHNOLOGY

Diamond C engineers I-Beams, optimizes them and then builds specifically for each trailer configuration, just like the semi-trailer manufacturers have been doing for decades. These engineered I-Beam frames are taller, stronger, and lighter than the industry standard for deck-over and flatbed trailers.

Depending on the model, the beams on gooseneck trailers range from 14-18″ tall, and the beams on compatible dump and equipment trailer models range from 10-12″ tall. Standard steel will buckle and break at 36 ksi, and the beams are built using steel rated at 50 ksi minimum, so it springs back no matter what load you put on it.

THE CAMBER

The deck and frame have a slight camber when not loaded. When loaded, it flexes as necessary to level but never sags like traditional goosenecks do.This helps secure the load and prevents your load from swaying.

You’ll notice our goosenecks look very different than normal flatbed gooseneck trailer necks do. This is by design. Our curved 12″ Engineered Neck design distributes force throughout the neck so there is no concentration of stress in the corners like on traditional goosenecks. These Engineered Necks come standard on any gooseneck Fleetneck series trailer, and well as on most of our bumper-pull trailers featuring our optional Gooseneck package upgrade.

Diamond C's unique Max Ramps are designed with versatility in mind. They can be stowed flat to provide an unobstructed loading surface, allowing the end user to use the full length of the bed to haul longer material. They can also be stowed in an upright position for added security & stability for equipment being transported on the dovetail.

From the materials used to the design of the springs and hinges, Diamond c Max Ramps are unlike any other two wide ramp system on the market. The two-part hinge system (one inside the body and one outside the body) distributes weight while loading and helps to prevent the ramps from kicking up or the dovetail from sagging.

Prior to getting down to work, we like to get the team primed and focused with some teambuilding. So what do you do in the Canadian Rockies? We went Ice Climbing and Dog Sledding (No salesman or dogs were harmed). After a day in the great Canadian outdoors everyone was recharged to learn for the rest of week.

All in all another successful meeting helping Flaman Trailers reach higher, providing new product offering and more focus on our customers.
